Vienna is for scooters: 1 million rides in the world’s most liveable city

In April 2021, Superpedestrian rolled out our bright yellow scooters in what was just our 30th city. Now, a little over a year later, riders in Vienna have taken more than 1 million rides on Superpedestrian scooters, avoiding more than 100,000 car trips and avoiding 13.5 tons of carbon emissions.

We love Vienna for its historic charm, walkability, public transportation, and green spaces. And, we’re not alone in loving Vienna -- the city was once again named the World’s Most Liveable City this year. To celebrate our 1 millionth ride, we’re highlighting the important role our scooters have helping Vienna achieve its climate goals, and sharing some interesting stats about our Vienna rides.

Helping Vienna achieve climate neutrality by 2040

Earlier this year, Vienna published its new climate strategy, which aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040 -- ten years earlier than previously planned. Two of the city’s goals are greener transport and zero waste by way of waste avoidance and recycling. The ways we deliver on the first goal, by displacing car trips and by electrifying our own vans, are more obvious. What’s less apparent is how we’re delivering on the goal of waste avoidance, which we do by operating a scooter that we designed to last.

Superpedestrian scooters are designed for at least 2,500 rides, or approximately 4,000 km without requiring any internal component replacement. Since, on average, our scooters travel approximately 2.2 km per day, this equates to approximately five years of use. We have tested our scooter’s robust design in the lab, with over 60 custom machines (such as our pothole simulation machine) that simulate over 4,000km of use. We are also seeing this claim hold up in cities, as an increasing number of heavily used scooters in our fleet are now approaching the 2,500 threshold and still going strong. In fact, 98% of our original fleet is still in use.

These are the best spots to ride, according to our local Superpedestrians

Vienna is experiencing a resurgence of culture and entertainment now that COVID measures have abated, which means more rides to more amazing destinations!

Vienna State Opera to Schönbrunn

Of course the Vienna Operahouse is at the top of our list for destinations in Vienna, but what to do after you’ve visited the landmark? We recommend a ride to Schönbrunn Palace. According to our Vienna Operations Manager Laurenz, you can make the trip twice as quickly by scooter, giving you more time to stop along the way. He recommends stopping at the Viennese Naschmarkt for lunch or a snack, then continuing along Gumpendorfer Strasse and Sechshauser Strasse to the entrance to Schlosspark. Or, you can also use the Linke Wienzeile and ride the bike path. Once you get to Schönbrunn Palace, take a hike up to the Gloriette, pay a visit to the zoo, or just bask in the beauty of the palace.

Ride across the 7th, 8th, and 9th districts

This is the ride for people who understand that the journey is the destination. Districts 7 to 9 are especially popular, being filled with trendy cafes and bars. After a stroll in one of Vienna's most beautiful garden palaces in Liechtensteinpark, journey by scooter to Josefstadt via Spitalgasse, past the Old General Hospital. Take Lederergasse and Strozzigasse to quickly arrive in Neubaugasse, and make a stop at one of the many cafes near St. Ulrichplatz. The 7th district is also known for its museums. Check out the Leopold Museum, Mumok, and Kunsthalle.

Respectful riding and parking keeps Vienna great

Much of what makes Vienna an amazing city is its walkability. Superpedestrian scooters are a great complement to walking, when you want your walk to go a little further or need to get somewhere just a little faster. When you head out to explore Vienna on a Superpedestrian scooter, remember these tips to keep pedestrians and yourself safe:

  • Park respectfully by using the kickstand to park upright, keeping walkways clear, paying attention not to block curb ramps or doors, and keeping public transit stops clear

  • Always ride one person per scooter

  • Been drinking? Skip the scooter ride and take public transport instead
