We're getting creative for sustainability
Sustainability starts with design
We built our Superpedestrian e-scooters from the ground up, and in a time when shared scooters lasted barely a month, we were engineering ours to last six years. We still have the longest scooter lifespan in the industry, with our earliest scooters still going strong.
By investing up front in good design and rugged materials, we reduce the materials needed for manufacturing, are able to ensure our vehicles are built with 100% recyclable materials, and reduce the need for transporting new vehicles, the biggest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in the industry. Also, since all our scooters use the same modular design, we are able to repair and reuse parts.
Upcycling?
Still, we’ve been thinking about our scooters that will be coming up on their sixth birthdays soon. To be honest, we’re sad to think of our old friends getting recycled, and our EMEA team wondered if there could be a fun way to upcycle them instead.
So, they reached out to Barcelona architect Magda Barceló with a challenge: could she find a way to upcycle our scooters, AND address sustainability in some other area of our business, AND make the solutions easy enough for our operations teams to do themselves?
Here are some of the creative ideas she helped us with:
Project 1: Floorboard shelving
What it is: shelves made from our scooter’s floorboards
How we imagine using it: in our operations centers
What it replaces: buying and shipping new shelves
Project 2: Chassis streetlamps
What it is: overhead lighting using our scooter’s aluminum chassis
How we imagine using it: at parking stations and mobility hubs to help nighttime riders
What it replaces: sourcing and shipping brand new lighting
Still a long way away
We love these creative ideas, but we’re still a long way away from our very first scooters nearing their end-of-life. But, we’re ready with some creative — and doable! — ideas to see our scooters continue to live on in our operations. Scooter furniture? Why not!
